The post is based at the Department of Human Geography, Lund University. The department combines tradition with modern research and education. The research conducted in several of the fields at the department was judged to be excellent in the most recent research assessment exercise at Lund University (RQ08). In recent decades, the department has been successful in the competition for external research funding and has close ties with specialised centres such as CIRCLE and LUCSUS at Lund University. The key areas of research are economic geography, development geography and landscape, urban and social geography, among others. The strong research orientation is reflected in the education. Many of our courses and programmes have been developed in connection with research projects and students are introduced to current knowledge by researching lecturers. The teaching environment has for a long time been international in orientation and many of the courses and programmes offered at the department are specifically aimed at international students. The department is housed in modern premises in central Lund.

During the 2012/2013 academic year, the CARTA program is planning to offer up to 25 PhD fellowships. The Fellowship, which is tenable at one of the participating African universities, includes the cost of fellows’ participation in the advanced seminars; a modest monthly stipend; small grants for research activities; a laptop loaded with relevant software; funds for travel to conferences, as well as costs for participating in joint program activities. The fellowship runs for a maximum of four years. Fellowships cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and other university fees in special circumstances only. Partner institutions are expected to continue paying Fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) and to modify workloads for the fellows to enable them to fully participate in CARTA organized activities pertaining to their PhD programme and also to concentrate fully on their PhD studies. Many organizational tasks are dependent on IT systems. This means that there is a need to develop support for how this type of systems can be analyzed in risk and vulnerability analyses. This will be carried out in a number of tasks. A survey of affected IT systems will be carried out, and after this a survey of IT related incidents will be conducted. Based on this, guidelines for risk and vulnerability analysis for organizations with a large degree of IT systems will be formulated and evaluated. The research is conducted in the research program PRIVAD (Program for Risk and Vulnerability Analysis Development), funded by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). The research program lasts from 2011 to 2015 and the PhD student will be one of four PhD students that start simultaneously at the university in the four parts the program.

Scholarship Details:

The Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applicants for three Ph.D. fellowships within geotechnical engineering applied to foundation of offshore wind turbines. The positions are a part of a joint academia-industrial initiative in the field Renewable Energy at the faculty. The research initiative is supported financially by Statoil, DNVand Norconsult. The Ph.D. candidates will together with a postdoc and a professor form a research group with special focus on foundation of offshore wind turbines. The research will be part of a multidisciplinary effort within marine technology, hydrodynamics, structural engineering and material science and will be carried out in close cooperation with industry and the Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research, Nowitech. Research topics for the Ph.D. fellowships are:

Ph.D. 1: Numerical modelling of soil-wind turbine interaction
An important design criterion for offshore wind turbines is to ensure that the eigenfrequencies are sufficiently far from the main excitation frequencies. The stiffness of the foundation gives an important contribution to the global stiffness and the eigenfrequency. The aim for this study will be to improve the calculation methods for stiffness and damping of the foundation-soil interaction. The study will include finite element modelling, development of constitutive models for practical application to wind energy foundations and modelling of stiffness and damping applicable for fatigue life evaluations. Low strain stiffness of the soil will be addressed in particular. The study may also include accumulation of plastic strains during cyclic loading.

Ph.D. 2: Revision of the p-y curves to improve their applicability to monopile foundations
The p-y curves defined in current design standards (API, DNV) are based on field tests on more flexible and smaller diameter piles than the typical monopiles for wind turbine foundations. Applying the conventional p-y curves may result in over conservative foundation design. The main focus of this study will be to evaluate and improve the current p-y curves based on back calculation of instrumented full scale wind turbine foundations. The study may also include model tests on piles with length- diameter-stiffness ratios representative for typical monopile foundations. In addition the study may include the effect of scour on stiffness and capacity of wind turbine foundation.

Ph.D. 3: Risk and reliability in geotechnical engineering

The current design practice for offshore wind turbine foundation relies heavily on experiences gained from Oil & Gas industry, leading to a prominent problem of over-design. One challenge for the wind industry is therefore to reduce cost but maintain an acceptable reliability margin. This particular project aims at developing a rational and systematic approach to deal with soil variability using statistical methods which can be applied to foundations of offshore wind turbines. The study includes soil data evaluation to identify soil properties and aspects of soil variability that affect the performance of offshore wind turbine foundations. The study also involves developing probabilistic models that encompass important soil variability. The probabilistic models may further be integrated into design using, for instance, the First Order Reliability Method or Monte-Carlo simulation.

Candidate Background:

Candidate with background and interest in engineering mathematics, statistics and/or numerical methods in geotechnical engineering (i.e. implementation and using numerical models) are strongly encouraged to apply. Ph.D. fellowships are awarded for a total of 3 years.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree within geotechnical engineering or equivalent and must be qualified for admittance to Ph.D. study at NTNU.

Salaries:

Ph.D. fellows are remunerated in the salary level 48-56 on the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 391 100 to NOK 448 100 per year (before tax). Ph.D. students with limited or no work experience after graduation are normally remunerated at level 48. A pension contribution to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens pensjonskasse) of 2 % of gross salary will be deducted.

The Department of Financial Economics is currently inviting applications for new doctoral scholarships, with a startdate in August 2012. The PhD specialisation in Financial Economics focuses on developing the doctoral students’ theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers in the area of finance. We encourage applications from students with solid quantitative skills and a strong background in disciplines that are fundamental to finance, such as economics, statistics and social sciences, who are interested in an academic career in research and teaching, and possess strong communication and analytical skills. We welcome research interests and project proposals, both theoretical or empirical, in areas such as asset pricing, corporate finance, portfolio management, banking, market microstructure, experimental finance, and behavioural finance. After successful completion of the programme we expect our graduates to be employed at leading academic institutions, or the research departments of international or national regulatory organization, and investment firms.

Eligibility Details:

-Applicants must have completed a two year (120 ECTS) Master’s Degree with thesis work (preferably a Master of Science) by July 2012 to be considered for a scholarship. An average of grade B or better is required.
- TOEFL / IELTS Students are required to have a good command of the English language.

The program is for highly motivated individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities, have completed the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree, have at least three years professional work experience, and are committed to return and contribute to their communities. The fellowships are for one to two years.Each applicant should choose one field of study that matches his/her chief area of interest. The following field descriptions are illustrative and applicants should note that individual academic host institution programs of study may differ in course offerings, subspecialties, and academic requirements.

Eligibility Details:

In addition to the General Prerequisites, the applicant should: have completed an equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree from a recognized Indian university with at least 55% marks.
