Eligibility Details:

You must have a first degree by the time you start at Oxford, which means that you must be at least in the final year of your first degree when you apply for the Scholarship.

There is one scholarship available worth £4,500.00. The scholarship will take the form of a reduction in tuition fees. No cash alternative is available. A research associate position is available on the MRC funded project “Designing and analyzing multi-arm multi-stage clinical trials with one or more endpoints”. The project is a cross-institutional initiative between the Statistics Groups at the MRC Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge and the Universities of Lancaster led by Jack Bowden, James Wason (both Cambridge) and Thomas Jaki (Lancaster). Throughout the programme there will be opportunities to engage and collaborate with researchers based at both academic groups and partners in industry and clinical trials units.

In the UK, air pollution is estimated to reduce average life expectancy by around 6 months, with corresponding equivalent health cost of £19 billion annually. Estimation of the effects of air pollution on human health is a complex task for a number of reasons: misalignment of health and air pollution data in both space and time; the existence of spatio-temporal correlation; and the presence of confounding factors. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council is funding a large interdisciplinary project to develop statistical methodology to address these issues. The main goal of the project is to combine spatio-temporal models for pollution and health data into a single large hierarchical Bayesian model. Two Research Fellow (RF) positions in Statistics are available as part of this exciting collaborative project, which will involve air quality modelers, climate scientists, epidemiologists and statisticians at the Universities of Southampton and Glasgow, and at the Met Office. One RF position will be within the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) and Mathematics at the University of Southampton and the second position will be in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Glasgow.

There are two possible UTS scholarship amounts for one year study programmes and two for two year programmes. The student can only chose and apply for one of these.

Scholarship Details:

The successful candidate will be responsible for arranging and carrying out research interviews with adults with learning difficulties and mental disorders. The research project aims to investigate the role of DNA variation in this group of people. This post is envisaged to involve travelling to meet volunteers at their home or in clinical settings away from the department. The successful candidate will also be required to collect blood and/or saliva samples from volunteers. In addition he/she will be expected to complete interview questionnaires and input data into databases. All of the above requires exemplary record keeping. The post holder will be expected to attend and present the project and its findings at meetings and seminars and contributing strongly to a research group that practices a very high standard of science. The position is funded for 18 months in the first instance by the Bailey Thomas Charitable Research Fund.

The aim of this research is to identify and investigate general structuring mechanisms and nutrient pathways in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This will be done within the framework of ecological stoichiometry theory, which is defined as the balance of multiple chemical substances in ecological interactions and explicitly considers the combined dynamics of key elements such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). This project will further identify how environmental gradients affect these nutrient pathways in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Sweden is particularly well suited to explore these questions due its geographic size (spanning more than 13 degrees of latitude), its gradient in land-use intensities and the large amount of data available from national monitoring programs.

Eligibility Details:

To qualify for the position you should have a PhD degree in ecology, or equivalent, in the first case not more than 3 years old. Knowledge of mathematical modeling, ecological stoichiometry (terrestrial or aquatic) and/or soil biogeochemistry is desirable. From the successful candidate, we expect a documented capability of autonomous scientific research work and skills in writing scientific publications in English.
