PhD Research Fellow in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science or Mathematics – Belgium

Scholarship Details:
The Research focuses on investigating, experimentally, the permeability of chemical products through polymeric components as membranes and microcapsule and to develop hybrid models by developing systematic tools for the optimal design of sustainable processes to produce microcapsules. This is a double target, on one site to produce polymeric membranes and characterize their performance as well as their morphology and to develop a mathematical model.

Scholarship Description:

The P&G European Technical Centre in Strombeek (Belgium) is a key training centre for worldwide P&G technical staff and offers research training for the development of fundamental knowledge on biotechnology alternatives to basic chemicals in detergents. We are a pioneer in developing new technologies and innovations in consumer product categories that improve the health and well being of consumers worldwide, through the application of leading edge science and technology and a deep understanding of consumer needs.

Together with five excellent European partners we offer young researchers a research perspective at world-class scientific level in multidisciplinary and international teams to achieve a breakthrough in the development of sustainable detergents. Thanks to the European funded Programme on Academia- Industry Partnership Pathway (CAP-IT) we are currently seeking a:

Research fellow (for 24 months) with a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science or Mathematics

On the experimental side, there will be the synthesis of membranes and their test in laboratory cells, their imaging in electronic microscopes and the determination of permeability coefficients from experiments done at the lab.

On the modelling part, we will investigate the combined use of mathematical programming, process simulation and life cycle assessment principles to automatically generate the best process alternatives that may be implemented and compare with the actual technology used.

Our approach relies on the combined use of multi-criteria mixed integer modelling techniques and LCA principles as a way of systematizing the computation of process alternatives that may lead to important environmental savings.

During the research, the fellow will develop multidisciplinary knowledge on encapsulation, surfactant structuring, modelling, particle coating and manufacturing technologies. The research is carried out at the University Rovira i Virgili located in Tarragona (Spain).
