Postdoc or Junior Researcher in Environmental Physics and Biophysics Switzerland

Scholarship Details:

The chair of Soil and Terrestrial Environmental Physics in the department of Environmental Science at ETH is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow (duration of 2 – 3 years) or a junior researcher (4-6 years) in broad research area of porous media fluid physics or with expertise in biological processes taking place in porous media. We are an interdisciplinary group based at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, with expertise in characterization and modeling of fluid and solid mechanics of porous media as applied to hydrology and natural hazards (landslides); fundamental biophysical interactions of plant and microbial life in soils; and exchanges with atmosphere (evaporation and surface energy balance). The group enjoys access to an array of observational facilities (neutron radiography, x-ray tomography) and owns various hydro-geophysical tools (soil physics lab, ERT, acoustic emissions, thermal imaging).

Candidates:
A successful candidate will contribute to one or several areas in our interdisciplinary team by improving understanding and characterization of pore scale fluid displacement processes; expanding our biophysical modeling and experimental capabilities (microbial or plant); and enhancing expertise in mechanics linked with landslides and other hydro-mechanical changes; providing guidance and sharing expertise with students and colleagues in our team; contributing to on-going interdisciplinary studies; and publishing in high quality journals.

Eligibility Details:
The candidate should have a few years of research experience and a doctoral degree in physics, engineering, hydrology, ecophysiology, soil science or a related field. The background of the candidate should be in terrestrial systems, porous media physics, and experience in modeling and measurements. Programming and basic knowledge in environmental instrumentation is an advantage, fluency in English and good writing skills are required.

Contact Details:
Potential applicants are invited to contact Dani Or (dani.or@env.ethz.ch). The application including a CV, a statement of interest and two addresses of referees should be submitted online by using the button below. Applications received before December 15 2010 will receive full consideration but the position will remain open until filled.
