Postdoctoral Fellowship in Climate Change and Land Surface Processes 2011, South Africa

Scholarship Details:

A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in climate change and land surface processes has been established by the University Research Committee of the University of Cape Town.

Applications for the Fellowship are invited from suitably qualified candidates, who will contribute to the development of a South African capacity in regional-scale land surface modelling, by implementing, testing and developing the JULES land-surface model in the southern African context. The modelling capacity will then be used to explore a number of critical questions of relevance to global change in Southern Africa including: the response of savannah systems to climate, land use management and CO2; understanding regional hydrology, water resources and climate change; regional carbon cycling and budgets.

Value and tenure: The Fellowship valued at R200,000 per annum, and is tenable for one year. A second year of tenure will be available, but this will be contingent on satisfactory progress through year one. The PDRF will work under the supervision of Professor Mark New.

Eligibility Details:

Applicants should satisfy the following criteria: (i) the PhD must have been awarded within the last 5 years; (ii) research experience in one or more of land-surface modelling, or a closely related field; (iii) experience of working in a Linux/Unix environment; (iv) strong or emerging publication record; (v) ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; (vi) the successful applicant will not have held any professional permanent posts since qualifying with the \PhD degree; (vii) the successful candidate will be required to comply with the policies and practices for the Postdoctoral Research Sector at the University of Cape Town, and (viii) the successful candidate will be required to register at the University of Cape town as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and will be expected to commence the required research by no later than 1 Feb 2012.
